Collaborative Engineering Solutions for Airport Structures
Airports are some of the most demanding environments when it comes to construction and design. The fast-paced, high-traffic nature of these spaces require architectural structures that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and disaster-resistant.
Novum Structures has consistently delivered on these requirements. We work collaboratively with architects, general contractors, and owners to develop technical solutions that maintain the design intent while respecting budgets.

Novum was contracted to engineer, fabricate and install five point-supported glass canopies for Richmond International Airport’s Terminals D, E, and F.
Novum engineered the beam and purlin end connections as moment connections – providing lateral stability. Each canopy’s steel support framing system is attached to the building structure and suspended by diagonal steel support rods. These impressive canopies, trapezoid-shaped, span from 26 to 29 feet wide.

Collaborating with Gresham, Smith and Partners, Novum ensured the structure aligned with the airport’s modern design, offering durability and visual appeal.

At Sea-Tac International Airport, Novum engineered and installed a striking double-curved glass wall. One of the largest in the U.S., the 17,700 sq ft wall provides sweeping views of the runway.
- A 3/4″ diameter cable net creates its double-curved, saddle-like surface, with tension elements running vertically and horizontally.
- The glazing consists of 4′ x 8′ insulated glass panels, point-fixed to the support cables.

Working closely with Fentress Architects & JE Dunn Construction Group, Novum integrated the cutting-edge design with functional engineering in a complex environment.

For the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Novum was contracted to engineer, furnish, and install eight glass-enclosed elevator shafts. The glass offers clear sightlines that enhance user experience and wayfinding within the parking structure.
The glass enclosure also enhances safety and accessibility, creating a pleasant and secure environment for travelers.

Novum collaborated with The Freelon Group (now part of Perkins&Will), along with Walsh Construction, to ensure the glass enclosures featured a safe, modern design that enhances the user experience.

For Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 3, Novum engineered a unique ETFE forecourt canopy, designed by Foster + Partners.
The design features seventy ETFE air-filled pillows. Each pillow showcases a custom screen print pattern. This lightweight, energy-efficient structure delivers sun protection during the day and a glowing effect with LED lighting at night.

The complex design was successfully delivered despite stringent deadlines and tough site logistics at one of the world’s busiest airports.
Novum’s expertise in ETFE systems allowed for a lightweight, energy-efficient solution that enhances both the aesthetic and functional elements of the terminal.

At Indianapolis International Airport, Novum was chosen to engineer and install the expansive low-rise double-curved skylight that serves as a centerpiece above the Civic Plaza. The skylight, designed by HOK, spans 200 feet in diameter and is supported by a network of steel beams and tension cables.

Suspended 60 feet above the bustling plaza, the skylight features laminated, insulating glass with a reflective coating. The glass’s reflective properties help control solar heat gain, optimizing energy use within the terminal without sacrificing natural light.
Structural Engineering Project Expertise for Airport Architecture
Novum delivers world-class architectural structures with comprehensive engineering services that cover the entire project lifecycle. Our holistic and collaborative approach ensures projects meet all design and performance goals.

Disaster Resistant Architecture
Airports often face environmental challenges, especially in hurricane-prone areas. Novum’s Hurricane Approved Systems combine aesthetic appeal with structural integrity. They are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions such as high-velocity hurricane zones.
Our Miami-Dade approved systems feature laminated glass and steel structures that have undergone rigorous missile impact testing, ensuring that airport structures remain both beautiful and resilient.
Novum’s collaboration with architects means they can deliver disaster-resistant structures without compromising on design. This expertise ensures airports remain operational and safe, even in the face of natural disasters, while maintaining their architectural integrity.
